Notes on NATURE NURTURE view bio

The French philosopher Blaise Pascal described nature as "an infinite sphere of which the center is everywhere and the circumference nowhere." Like this master of axioms, Jennifer Shaw draws the infinite from the minute in her series on wild and cultivated flowers, vines, and the bugs that inhabit them. The photos, taken in her own garden and in the wilds of Northern Louisiana, were created with a Holga plastic camera, altered by affixing a mirror to the magnifying lens. The soft, ethereal close-ups of flowers and bugs in varying life stages evoke the paradox of life as a constantly regenerating state of transience. "I was interested in watching these plants and flowers as they're coming to bud and then wilting and going to seed," she says. "They're dying, but they're also traveling on."
