The celestial light in Brian Kosoff's landscapes has won him comparisons to the master landscape photographer, Ansel Adams. Yet Kosoff's darkroom technique imbues his images with a painterly quality that is very much his own. Kosoff admits that he struggled, at first, trying to recapture the places that had been immortalized by Adams: "When you go to many of these places, and try to capture what you're seeing, you're confronted with the Ansel Adams legacy every step of the way . . . it is impossible to compete with his memorable images." Kosoff is more interested in using his "toolbox of techniques" to render time in a way that a painter or a sculptor cannot (and Adams did not). "I'm not content only to capture what I see before me," he says. "I record not what's there but what could be there."
