"Nature references everything," says Torkil Gudnason. "It's where we come from, where we are going." In "Homme," Gudnason abstracts those references by silhouetting, then delicately spotlighting, the eccentric forms of leaves, flowers and cacti. Some of the shapes are so foreign they might have been plucked from another planet. Others are recognizable, yet all the same transformed by Gudnason's rapt attention. A simple artichoke, stripped of its color, no longer looks like food; instead, we see a life force of ingenious (and some would say masculine) design: layers of armor encasing the sought-after heart inside.
